Storage and Retrieval Processes Under Conditions of Proactive Interference.

Abstract

Two experiments were conducted to localize the effects of proactive interference (PI) in short-term memory experiments to difficulties in one or more of the memory sub-processes: the storage, holding or retrieval processes. Several blocks of categorically-related word bigrams were presented in a Brown Peterson (B-P) PI release paradign, and the expected PI build-up and release were observed. Experiment 2 employed a B-P PI release paradigm in which on some trials a free recall of the items in the current block was substituted for the usual B-P recall. The broad outline of a model of the retrieval process was presented to account for the results obtained. (Modified author abstract)
