Study of Pi-Bonding in Silicon Nitride and Related Compounds.

Abstract

The degree and nature of (p-d)pi-bonding in various silicon nitrogen compounds was studied. The simple solid compounds may in fact be one of the more easily studied examples of this mode of bonding. On the basis of relative bond lengths and angular relationships it is predicted that, assuming both alpha and beta silicon nitrides are pure Si3N4 compounds, the beta form is more stable than the alpha although, probably, only by a very small amount. Some implications for Si-Al-O-N bonding are reviewed. Molecular orbital calculations should be enlightening as to the stereochemical relationships between a tetrahedral silicon atom and variously disposed ligands with internal pi bonding capability.
