Information Storage in Photodichroic Crystals.

Abstract

The dichroism photosensitivity of the M center in NaF and the M sub A center in KCl:NaCL has increased by more than an order of magnitude by doping with certain electron trapping impurities. Efforts to improve the fatigue resistance of NaF at room temperature have proceeded along two lines; (1) the formation of M sub A centers and (2) the elimination of interstitial defects. The M sub A center has been formed in NaF:LiF but it is not as stable as the analogous center in KCl:NaCl, and thus does not lead to improved fatigue resistance. The dispersion of M centers in NaF has been measured and found to be sufficient to predict appreciable diffraction efficiencies and suggest holographic applications. (Modified author abstract)
