Comparative Performance of Structural Layers in Pavement Systems. Volume 1. Design, Construction, and Behavior under Traffic of Pavement Test Sections

Abstract

Rigid and flexible pavement test sections were constructed to evaluate the performance of pavements incorporating a membrane-enveloped soil layer, insulating materials, chemically stabilized soil layers, and various types of surfacing including fibrous-reinforced concrete, plain portland cement concrete, and asphaltic concrete. These test sections were trafficked with 200- and 240-kip twin-tandem assemblies (Boeing 747 spacing) and a 50-kip single-wheel assembly. The design, construction, and behavior under traffic of the pavements are reported herein; the data will be used in further studies to determine the response of the pavement to both static and dynamic loads and to develop design and construction criteria. These studies will be reported in subsequent volumes.
