The Measurement of Orientational Order in Cholesteric Liquid Crystals.

Abstract

The relationship between a second rank tensor anisotropy and the orientational order in a cholesteric liquid crystal is derived. Experimental results on a mixture of cholesteryl chloride and p-azoxyanisole confirm this relationship and also provide an explanation of the dipolar NMR lineshape of a sample in the cholesteric phase.
