A Three Dimensional 'Variable Node' Isoparametric Solid Element,

Abstract

Methods for the linear stress analysis of complex three dimensional bodies have been limited, until very recently, to a few cases involving special geometric and loading situations; corresponding analyses for nonlinear material behavior have been virtually nonexistent. Now, however, with the aid of three dimensional isoparametric solid elements, many of the difficulties inherent in analyzing three dimensional nonlinear material behavior were overcome. In this memorandum the author presents investigations of a 'mixed' isoparametric hexahedron containing a variable number of nodes (between 8 and 20). A derivation is presented for the element stiffness matrix consistent mass matrix, initial strain matrix, and consistent load vector allowing for orthotropic material behavior.
