Synthetic Programs Library - Concepts and Facilities, User's Guide.

Abstract

Some form of benchmarks have for some time constituted the accepted form of minimum performance measurement in competitive computer system selection. Benchmarks have the advantages of constituting 'semi-real' work mixes and running on real systems. Benchmarks also suffer from certain disadvantages. Synthetic programs have been suggested as a viable alternative to natural benchmarks. A small library of synthetic COBOL programs has been developed, and experiments are being conducted to determine its suitability as a source of benchmark programs. The synthetic programs are task-oriented and completely portable.
