Type II Film Superconductors for Power Applications.

Abstract

A basic theoretical background of type II superconductors and an introduction into materials are presented. The requirements for these materials for Army power applications are analyzed and compared with the present availability of these materials. A series of solid-solution alloy systems has been investigated, namely Niobium-Zirconium, Niobium-Titanium, Niobium-Tantalum, Titanium-Vanadium, Niobium-Vanadium, and Tantalum-Titanium. In addition, a few compound systems have been examined, namely Niobium-Nitride, Niobium-Carbide, and the solid solution or substitution compound system of Niobium-Nitride-Carbide. Also, work has been initiated on intermetallic compounds, namely Niobium-Aluminum, Niobium-Germanium, and Niobium Gallium.
