On Improving Efficiency of an Algorithm for Structural Optimization and a User's Manual for Program TRUSSOPT2.

Abstract

In this report, an improved algorithm for optimal design of structures is presented. The improvements are based on the extension of ideas of state space optimal control theory. The constraint set is divided into four distinct subsets and special characteristics of these subsets are exploited to improve efficiency of the algorithm. Some further improvements in structural analysis, design sensitivity analysis and optimum design change routines, for structures analyzed by the finite-element techniques, are suggested. Several optimum designs for three truss structures are obtained. The computational times obtained herein are considerably reduced, by a factor of fifteen in some cases. (Author)
