Shock Hardness of Graphite/Epoxy Composites,
Abstract
The principal requirements for ABM (Advanced Ballistic Missile) substructure marerials are outstanding strength and stiffness at low weight. Carbon/epoxy composites are particularly attractive in this regard. In fact, these composites are presently undergoing intensive assessment studies in anticipation of their being employed as substructure material for the Advanced Terminal Interceptor (ATI) system. This paper presents the results of an important phase of this assessment: the resistance, or 'hardness', of graphite/epoxy composites against damage due to intense shock waves. A shock hardness study of composites consists of two distinct phases: the measurement of the material's ability to mitigate a compressive wave before tensile components arise, and the material's ability to withstand dynamic fracture once the tensile components do arise.
