X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Explosive Solids,
Abstract
A wide-ranging program to apply the new technique of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to the study of explosive solids is described, along with major findings to date. Significant general contributions are summarized: (a) The potential importance of a new powerful and versatile spectroscopy was recognized in the XPS technique, and the in-house capability for using it to pursue Army research interests was developed. (b) The XPS technique was brought to bear on solids of primary importance to the Army, particularly to explosives, propellants and related compounds. Results of these studies, coupled with molecular orbital calculations performed by us and by others, have led to new fundamental knowledge of their electronic structure, reaction mechanisms, and of microscopic processes involved in rapid decomposition. (c) The potential utility of XPS for immediate application to Army and forensic problems was recognized and developed.
