Cueing System Feasibility Study.
Abstract
The concept feasibility and proposed trial design of a very compact and low-cost laser cuer and hand-held viewer/receiver for target acquisition has been investigated. The concept utilizes a disposable neodymium-type laser pulser, to be directed at enemy targets by forward personnel, and a complementary viewer by a standoff weapons system. The laser concept features a photoflash-pumped neodymium:YAG laser which is not Q-switched. The design analysis indicates that the target cue can be visually superimposed as a light-spot on the operator's real-scene view, in true position and with adequate visual contrast. The viewer design permits the optional use of RF synchronization of the trigger pulse of a Q-switched laser used by the forward observer with the electronic gate in the image tube at the weapons delivery system. The analysis also includes consideration of signal-to-noise, weight, and specification projections, in addition to budgetary estimates of production costs for both the laser and the viewer.
