Optimization of Single Particle Absorption Cross Section,

Abstract

The single particle absorption cross section is maximized with respect to the imaginary component of permittivity, separately, by means of elementary calculus. This optimization yields relationships between the aspect ratio and the real and imaginary parts of permeability and permittivity for the single particles. The significance of this optimization is discussed for the magnetic spherical and cylindrical particle cases and for the dielectric spherical and cylindrical particle cases. The effect of this maximization on the single particle scattering cross section and the minimization of the latter cross section are presented. (Modified author abstract)
