An R and D Effort to Study the Chemistry of a Disturbed Ionosphere.

Abstract

This report presents a compendium of mass spectrometer measurements of positive and negative ion spectra obtained during the irradiation of airlike gas mixtures by relativistic electrons, under conditions which partially simulate the nighttime disturbed stratosphere. The measurements were performed to provide a data base, obtained under controlled laboratory conditions, for comparison with the predictions of multispecies atmospheric chemistry codes, to test the validity of the codes. Measurements were made at pressures of 1, 2, and Torr, and at 300K, in each of three sample atmospheres, each containing essentially 80% N2, 20% O2, but differing in the concentrations of H2O and CO2. Considerable effort has been devoted to determining the quantitative variation of relative ion currents with the various operating parameters of the mass spectrometer, an rf monopole mass filter, and its associated ion sampling and detection systems.
