Isolation and Characterization of Plasmodial and Babesial Antigens.

Abstract

In the past year a neutralization test was developed capable of detecting antimerozoite antibody in the serum of rats recovering from malaria. It has been demonstrated that such serum also contains opsonic antibody which markedly stimulates phagocytosis of merozoites by phagocytes from normal rats but does not contain antibody that stimulates phagocytosis of erythrocytes from infected rats. Also demonstrated is that injection of freeze thawed erythrocytic merozoites protects rats from the effects of challenge with parasitized erythrocytes. By immunization and neutralization procedures it can be determined whether specific antigens associated with erythrocytic merozoites significantly contribute to stimulation of immunity in malarious rats. The ultrasonically freed merozoites were also adapted to studies of erythrocyte penetration in vitro and will thus be able to determine if protective antibodies act by interfering with merozoite penetration as well as by stimulating phagocytosis. A number of serologic tests by complement fixation which showed that serum from animals with Babesia microti infection does not react with Plasmodium berghei antigen. (Modified author abstract)
