A Numerical Model of the Mid-Latitude Ionosphere.
Abstract
A description of the theoretical one-dimensional laminar model of the mid-latitude ionosphere developed at NRL is presented. The physics, Chemistry, and approximations that go into the model are described in detail. Radiation deposition and the applicable chemical reactions are discussed, and the multi-fluid equations governing velocities, temperatures, and densities in the ionosphere are reduced to a tractable one-dimensional set of equations with vertical variations. Numerical techniques used in solving the resulting coupled equations are outlined. Finally, preliminary results and future work on model are discussed. (Author)
