Finite Difference Calculations of the Free-Air Blast Field for an 8'/36 Gun.

Abstract

A two-dimensional hydrodymanic code has been used to simulate the free air blast field and post ejection internal ballistics of an 8'/36 gun, under consideration for development. The code is a two-material version of SHELLTIC and allows for a distinction between propellant gases and ambient air. The presence of a projectile was also considered in the calculations. The numerical analysis was carried out until 28.8 msec after projectile base ejection to enable the shock wave aft of the muzzle to reach the crew area. Results are presented for the blast propagation, with particular emphasis on the gun crew area. The post ejection internal ballistic are examined. The development and material composition of the smoke ring are shown. The shock bottle formation, steady configuration, and collapse can be followed. (Author)
