Technical Evaluation Report on the AGARD Specialists Meeting on Design against Fatigue.

Abstract

Considering that the requirements for fatigue life prediction of tactical aircraft vary widely between NATO countries, it seemed necessary to set up a Working Group, within the Structures and Materials Panel, to explore the problem and to propose, where possible, generally acceptable solutions. The Evaluation Report discusses the first step toward such a goal, the convening of a Specialists Meeting on 'Design Against Fatigue', held in The Hague, on October 9 and 10, 1973. Sixty-four Specialists attended the Meeting. Eight papers were presented the first day, and a round table discussion was held on the second day under the chairmanship of Professor J. Schijve from the Netherlands. The Meeting helped to clarify the objectives of the Working Group and to generate proposals for future action. This Evaluation Report shows, by the conclusions drawn concerning inspection of structures, fatigue load monitoring and the need for full scale tests, that the Specialists Meeting was a very important milestone in the progress toward a better understanding of the fatigue problems of military aircraft.
