A 4800 Bits/Sec Adaptive PCM Speech Coder,

Abstract

A speech coder is described which enables telephone speech signals to be transmitted over a 4800 bits/sec digital channel. The principle is that of a pulse code modulator which uses only one bit to code each sample. This bit represents the polarity of the sample. In addition, information is transmitted about the amplitude of the speech signal envelope. The speech quality achieved is low, but provides a usable communication channel. The system may be useful in situations where low bit rate digital transmission is necessary using simple coding equipment.
