Oceanographic Survey Report, Sea of Japan.

Abstract

A geological/geophysical and oceanographic survey was conducted in the Sea of Japan from October 1967 to June 1968 aboard the USNS SILAS BENT and the R/V F. V. HUNT. Dominant physiographic features of the sea are: Japan Basin (including Japan Abyssal Plain), Tatar Trough, Yamato Ridge, Korea Continental Borderland, and the continental slope. Three major stratigraphic units were recognized in the seismic profiles: (1) basement, (2) folded, faulted, and discontinuous sediments overlying basement, and (3) flat uppermost sediments. Most of the cored sediments were in the fine-silt to clay range; however, Japan Abyssal Plain had coarsed-textured turbidities. Large seasonal changes in surface water properties were observed. An extensive list of references is included in the report. (Modified author abstract)
