Impact Strength of Fibrous Composite Materials for High Performance Structures.

Abstract

Some relevant properties of advanced fiber- reinforced com-posite materials are discussed within the context of material toughness. The state-of-the-art in impact testing of such composites is analyzed, with significant results also sum-marized. Results of a series of impact testing carried out in this investigation are discussed. The tests were designed to study such factors as: direction of impact, freezing, sea-water submersion, and impact strength (energy). Some ways of improving composite toughness are discussed.
