Asymptotic Error Expansions for Spline Interpolation: Some Remarks,

Abstract

Asymptotic error expansions of the form (s sub h)(x) = f(x) + the summation from i=p to q (h sup i)(g sub i)(x) + O(h sup(q+1)) are derived for some particular schemes for determining splines s interpolating data of a given function f. Both local and global interpolation methods are considered; generally applicable, techniques are exemplified with cubic and quadratic splines for which the precise error expansions are developed.
