Measurements of Aluminum Oxide Kinetics

Abstract

The AeroChem high-temperature fast-flow reactor has been adapted to allow direct observation of AlO, v = 0 and 1 by laser-induced fluorescence. The rate coefficient k for the homogeneous gas phase reaction AlO + O2 to AlO2 + O has been measured by this technique. Using the collision frequency rate factor as an upper limit, the measurements suggest an activation energy for this reaction of < or = 0.8 eV.
