Performance Testing of a 3kW Hydrogen Resistojet.

Abstract

The RPE hydrogen resistojet J3 has been successfully tested at Oxford University at full design mass flow and full power. It produces an effective exhaust velocity (thrust per unit mass flow) of 7.57 km/s at an overall efficiency (kinetic power per unit total power) of 0.681. Its measured properties near the design point are close to design predictions, the discrepancies being within the combined uncertainties of the theoretical methods and experimental techniques. The results at full mass flow and full power are supported by comprehensive measurements at lower powers, and by measurements at one-tenth design mass flow, which show remarkably little scatter and are entirely self-consistent.
