Synthesis of Organometallic Semiconducting Polymers and Metal Carbonyl Polymers.

Abstract

The synthesis of three classes of ferrocene polymers was accomplished. Mixed oxidation state polymers were then prepared from each by oxidizing the polymers with dichlorodicyanoquinone, chloranil, picrate, BF4(-), tetracyanoquinodimethan, and I3(-) salts. Conductivities were measured and studied as a function of (1) the ferrocene/ferrocenium ratio and (2) the counterion. Polymers containing metal carbonyl functions were prepared. These were effective heterogenized, homogeneous catalysts. Bound isomerization, hydroformylation, and cyclooligomerization catalysts were prepared. A number of organometallic copolymers was made. Thermal and photochemical decomposition of metal-carbonyl-containing polymers released tiny metal oxide polymers within films. Volatile organocopper compounds for laser use were made.
