Observations and Studies of Auroral Ionization Processes.

Abstract

This report summarizes the electron flux measurements made by five rocket flights to altitudes covering the lower part of the ionosphere. The counters used are halogen-quenched Geiger-Mueller tubes with end windows of mica. The energy cut-off values for electrons have been 20 keV, 40 keV and 80 keV, respectively. By simulatneous measurements of electron density profiles the effective loss coefficients have been calculated during three of the flights. The obtained results are in good agreement with previous observations. All observations are made during weakly or moderately disturbed ionospheric conditions. (Author)
