Small Arms Gun Barrel Thermal Experimental Correlation Studies

Abstract

The research measures transient barrel temperatures for small arms guns as a correlation to analytically predicted data and an attempt to establish a correlation between thermal results and metallurgical determinations. A description is given of the experimental methodologies including barrel instrumentation, firing procedure and data acquisition. Results are given comparing various barrel materials and geometries for both sporadic and continuous automatic weapon fire. These results are discussed relative to barrel life and thermal performance.
