San Jose and St. Louis in the 1960s: A Case Study of Changing Urban Populations,

Abstract

The paper presents an analysis of the sharply contrasting demographic trends in two U.S. metropolitan areas and a discussion of their implications for public policy. Metropolitan San Jose, California, was chosen as a case study of rapid population growth in the low-density mode typical of the 1950s and 1960s. The city of St. Louis, exemplifies the dynamics of central-city population decline. The focus is on the dynamics of neighborhood and city-wide population change within the core jurisdiction of metropolitan St. Louis.
