Thermodynamics of Alloys: Studies of Nickel-Gallium, Nickel-Germanium and Nickel-Rhodium Alloys.

Abstract

Tin solution calorimetry has been used to measure the heats of formation of the solid phases of the nickel-gallium system at 300K and of the nickel-germanium system at 330K. Values are reported for the two nickel-rich binary solid solutions and for the intermediate phases Ni3Ga, Ni2Ga, Ni3Ga2, NiGa, Ni3Ga7, Ni2Ga3, Ni3Ge, Ni2Ge and NiGe. These and previously determined heats of formation of related palladium alloy compounds are compared and factors affecting the bonding mechanisms are discussed; a dependence of inter-component transfer upon electron concentration and electronegativity differences is suggested by a re-examination of the more extensive data available. Free energies of formation of the complete range of Ni-Rh solid solutions were obtained. These are combined with heats of formation, provided by tin solution calorimetry, to complete the thermodynamic assessment of the system. (Modified author abstract)
