Communist China's Population Problem in the 1980s,

Abstract

Communist China's tremendous effect to promote birth control in the last decade clearly reflects its leaders' concern over population growth. Has Communist China indeed passed the most critical stage of its demographic transition and is now heading toward a slowdown in population growth. The paper discusses certain aspects of this problem. It summarizes various estimates of the population size in the 1980s, explores the likelihood of a renewed upsurge in population growth, and examines some economic consequences if such an upsurge should occur.
