Oxidation of Sulfur and Amine Model Compounds.

Abstract

The free radical initiated oxidation of di-n-butyl sulfide (Bu2S) at 60C gave a slow conversion of sulfide to a complex mixture of products including sulfoxide, acids and butyraldehyde but only 20 per cent of the consumed oxygen could be accounted for. Light sensitized singlet oxygen oxidation however gave only the sulfoxide in up to 30 per cent conversion at moderate light levels. Several possible kinds of metal complexes that might activate oxygen are discussed. (Author)
