A Prototype System for Interactive Data Analysis,

Abstract

Research data collections often present problems to the data analyst. This is particularly true when the data are being used to seek new hypotheses. When the investigator's problem is complicated by relationships involving several variables, considerable trial and error may be necessary to develop an understanding of the data. The Rand prototype system aids the researcher in accessing his data and assists him in interactively applying a wide range of analytic procedures. He is able to review the raw data in tabular and graphical form; add to or delete from the data data base; flexibly subset and restructure the data for hypothesis testing and formulation; and apply many of the standard statistical tests. The potential usefulness of the system has been experienced in the areas of medical studies, econometrics, computer performance measurement and analysis of management data. (Author)
