Logistic and Economic Factors Affecting the Reclamation and Recycling of Waste Material and By-Products - Project 1: Short-Term Policies (Packaging).

Abstract

This report concerns policies on packaging specifications. It is DoD policy that packaging specifications should reflect environmental considerations. However, actual practice does not reflect established policies. Recommendations are made for the development and use of disposability indices for packaging materials. Other recommendations address life-cycle costs in packaging cost-estimating, a feedback report on packaging waste problems, training, and increased command attention to the solid waste problems of packaging. A recommendation is also made to develop and use statistical sampling procedures to measure and monitor periodically the amounts of packaging materials which enter the DoD system and which are ultimately recovered or disposed.
