Evaluation of Systems Specified to Work at a High Level of Reliability.
Abstract
The principal objective of this thesis was to develop a procedure yielding exact and sharp upper and lower bounds for the probability (P sub r) (h(x) (> or =) H). In order to achieve this, Section 2 presents the derivation of an approximate distribution of a linear combination of non-central chi-squared statistics with one degree of freedom which is particularly suited for a numerical evaluation. Section 3 derives a second order Taylor expansion of the function h(x), as an approximation to h(x) and then applies to this expansion the results of the preceeding Section 2. Section 4 presents a particular case which is of great importance in distribution theory although it is only of moderate interest from the reliability point of view. The general method of Section 3 is applied to a particular choice of the strata, and an alternative branch and bound method is developed in a special case. (Author)
