Fabrication and properties of Silicon Compounds. Task I. Fabrication, Microstructure and Selected Properties of SiAlON Compositions. Task II. Oxidation of SiC Hot-Pressed with Al2O3.

Abstract

This report describes two studies on refractory silicon compounds. Part I investigates the facrication and properties of different Si3N4-Al2O3 mixtures (up to 50 w/o Al2O3). These mixtures were hot pressed and sintered at temperatures up to 1650C. MgO additions enhanced sintering kinetics of these mixtures. Thermal expansion, flexural strength and densification were studied. In Part II the oxidation of dense SiC hot pressed with Al2O3 was studied as a function of the Al2O3 hot pressing aid.
