Visibility at Sea: An Annotated Bibliography,

Abstract

A major concern of various Codes at the Naval Weapons Center and the Naval Electronics Laboratory Center has been the effect of weather on the operation of naval electro-optical systems. A literature search was undertaken to study and evaluate research efforts and the state of the art of various aspects of the problem. The areas of interest included: Measurement of visibility at sea; Methods for accurately determining visibility at sea; Cloud free lines of sight (CFLOS); Methods for extending visibility measurements made in the visible to the infrared; Lidar measurements of visibility; Precipitation data over oceans; and Sources of Visibility Data. An annotated bibliography of this search was compiled and is presented alphabetically by author. The source materials are listed separately.
