Impact Response Characteristics of Polymeric Matrices.
Abstract
The basic response of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), polycarbonate (PC), and epoxy to impact was studied. Aims included: (1) obtaining reliable base data over as wide a range of impact velocities as feasible; (2) analyzing the response into time-dependent (relaxation) and strain-dependent (elastic, plastic) components; (3) determining the role of the indenter/projectile geometry on the response by using conical as well as spherical shapes; (4) exploring theoretically the effect of large deformations; (5) determining the effect of temperature; (6) producing a phenomenological description of the impact response; (7) providing insight into the basic phenomena involved. An 'equation of state' for each material was deduced which permits calculation of the force/indentation response over the range of conditions explored. The effect of temperature changes over the range 20 to 40C were determined for PMMA and PC. The results are discussed and suggestions offered for further studies. (Modified author abstract)
