Federal Leasing of Areas Seaward of Los Angeles and Orange Counties for Oil and Gas Development: Major Implications,

Abstract

The U.S. Department of the Interior has asked oil companies to nominate areas seaward of Los Angeles and Orange Counties which they would like to see offered for lease for oil and gas exploration and development. Under the 1953 Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act the Interior Department administers mineral development on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) and conducts competitive bidding for leases. Report briefly discusses areas likely to be nominated; the Los Angeles basin; amount of oil and gas production that might result from such lease sales; amount of production and when it will take place; and Interior Department policies, regulations, and requirements.
