Research and Development Professionals: An Examination of the Personal Value Systems and Operative Goals of the Scientists, Engineers and Managers in One Government R and D Organization.

Abstract

The purpose of the research was to investigate organization goals, personal value systems, and the operative goals of professionals in a research and development organization. The approach followed was to develop a set of value concepts determined to be behaviorally relevant to R+D professionals; identify a set of goals which were appropriate; incorporate value concepts, goals, and demographic variables in a questionnaire; administer the questionnaire to the professional members of a major federal government research facility; determine the primary value orientations of the professionals and the greatest behavioral relevance; and develop a hierarchical ranking of the official goals.
