Study of Solar-Energy Use in Marine Navigation Aids.

Abstract

The report describes qualitatively three types of solar converters; thermocouple, photogalvanic cell and barrier layer photovoltaic cells. The performance characteristics of the photovoltaic converter when used to convert solar radiation directly to electrical energy, the theory of p-n junction, and different types of solar cells are described in detail. Empirical and analytical relationships are derived which present expected efficiencies of conversion as a function of temperature, solar insolance, and other factors. A discussion is also included describing the state-of-the-art and practical and theoretical limitations of a solar battery system. (Modified author abstract)
