Defense Nuclear Agency Reaction Rate Handbook. Second Edition. Revision Number 2
Abstract
Many natural and man-made events entail disturbances of the upper atmosphere. Of particular interest is the sequence of deionization phenomena following a nuclear burst. These disturbed regions can be described mathematically with an appropriate computer code designed for a specific function. To describe the deionization of a disturbed region by an appropriate code one must know the source of the disturbance, its duration, the atmospheric species densities, and basic physical and chemical processes involved. In this chapter several multispecies codes for the D, E, and F regions are discussed. The dominant reactions and the important species are pointed out for each region. Numerical methods for solving the rate equations are reviewed. Simplified codes with physical and mathematical approximations and the lumped- parameter method are also discussed.
