Abstract
NPFC (Naval Publications and Forms Center) experiences significant inventory management problems due to the volatile nature of demand patterns, the frequent migration of new and revised forms into the system and the related form obsolescence. This study statistically examines a number of alternative demand forecasting techniques and, through the design and use of a computer simulation model, measures the impact of changes in demand forecasting procedures and inventory management decision rules on requisition effectiveness, inventory investment levels, and procurement workload. Study results indicate that the adoption of a modified economic order quantity formulation for determining order quantities can substantially reduce procurement workload with no adverse impact on requisition effectiveness or inventory investment levels.
