Improvement of Pressed Glass Lens,

Abstract

The conversion from cut glass to pressed glass 200 mm fresnel type drum lenses on the lantern for electrical buoys was attended by a decrease in efficiency resulting in a reduction of the peak beam candlepower of the light by about 30 precent. A British manufacturer of lenses for aids to navigation, Stone-Chance Ltd. claims that by grinding and polishing the interior of their pressed glass 200 mm lenses the peak beam candlepower can be increased by approximately 15 percent to 85 percent of the candlepower that could be achieved with a cut glass lens. This report records the results achieved by grinding and polishing the interior cylindrical surface of a Corning manufactured 200 mm pressed glass drum lens. (Modified author abstract)
