Effects on Life Preservers of Exposure to Tropical Climatic Conditions.

Abstract

Tests were commenced to determine the effects of tropical climatic conditions on life preservers currently approved by the Coast Guard. A number of Model 3 Adult Kapok life preservers (vinyl envelope), Fibrous Glass preservers, and Model AP unicellular plastic foam preservers were put into a controlled test chamber at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Samples of each type are to be removed after three months, six months, nine months, and finally twelve months exposure. The interim report covers tests on preservers removed after three months exposure. The trend of the data to date definitely indicates that life preservers with kapok in vinyl envelopes are adversely affected by tropical climatic conditions. (Modified author abstract)
