The Generation and Radiation of Supersonic Jet Exhaust Noise: A Progress Report on Studies of Jet Noise Generation and Radiation, Turbulence Structure and Laser Velocimetry

Abstract

The report summarizes the major theoretical and experimental efforts performed during the first year of a two-year program dealing with supersonic jet noise. Specific technical results are presented on the radiation of sound sources in a jet shear layer, a theoretical study of the large scale noise producing structure of jets, the design, construction and calibration of a high temperature anechoic facility for jet noise experiments, a series of high temperature subsonic and supersonic jet noise experiments, and the design and development of a laser velocimeter for the measurement of mean flow velocity and orthogonal components of turbulence velocity.
