Abstract
The essay does not intend to discuss the need for U.S. military bases in Japan but attempts to forecast their continued viability through an analysis of Japanese attitude as reported in Japanese media during the approximately six month period preceding House of Councillors (Upper House) elections on 7 July 1974.
