Evaluation of Explosives/Narcotics (EXNARC) Detection Dogs.

Abstract

The report describes the performance evaluation of three dogs trained to detect heroin and explosives. The dogs, a German Shepherd, a Golden Labrador Retriever, and a Royal Standard Poodle, were evaluated by MERDC personnel during the time period July 1972 through September 1972. Two objectives were accomplished: First, to determine whether dogs could detect explosives buried up to 8 inches deep in dry sand and second, to determine the capabilities and limitations of dogs to search out explosive samples concealed in a variety of scenarios such as office areas, and residences. For completeness, the results of the heroin- and weapon-detection evaluaton conducted by contractor personnel in San Antonio, Texas, is included in the test results. (Author)
