Forces on Cylinders and Spheres in an Oscillating Fluid.

Abstract

The in-line and lateral forces acting on cylinders and the in-line force acting on spheres placed in an harmonically oscillating flow have been measured. The periodic flow has been generated in a U-shaped channel through the use of a pneumatic oscillator. The drag, inertia, and lift coefficients as well as the total force coefficient have been determined through the use of Fourier analysis. (Modified author abstract)
