Application of Variance Reduction Techniques to the Computer Simulation of an Outpatient Clinic.

Abstract

A statistical analysis of the Silas B. Hays Hospital, North Fort Ord Family Practice Clinic was conducted over a period of five months of operation. A computer simulation model of the clinic was constructed. The response of the model's statistical measure of effectiveness of increased input arrival rates and the addition of one physicians' assistant to the staff was measured in a sensitivity analysis. Control variate and antithetic variance reduction techniques were applied to the model and compared with the ordinary Monte Carlo method for their effectiveness in the reduction of variance of the output statistic.
