Enroute Performance Assurance from User Aircraft Tracks.

Abstract

A method of using the NAS Enroute Stage A equipment to assure enroute navigation facility alignment is described. Frequent and continued updating of the alignment is accomplished by this technique without the use of special aircraft or flights, distraction or conscious participation by pilots, or increase in controller workload. The technique uses a computer to determine the intent of an aircraft to navigate a specific airway and to analyze the distribution of a large number of aircraft as they traverse that airway. If the sample is large enough, the airborne receiver errors will average to zero, and, except for a few cases of habitual diversion, the flight technical error (pilotage) also averages to zero. The final data shows consistency within a few tenths of a degree from one ten day interval to the next. (Modified author abstract)
